After receiving a recommendation from a colleague, I am currently reading this book with my seventh-grade Spanish language class.They love it! Not just is this book easy to read, it thoroughly reflects on the situation many Latin American kids go through in the US. The constant threat of being arrested just for living on the wrong side of the border is a traumatic experience for an entire generation of young Americans. This book addresses the issue in an inquisitive, but never mawkish manner. The narrative is intertwined with the living history of Native Americans in South America.
North American students know hardly anything about Native American politics south of the Rio Grande - even though many Latinos are direct descendants of the Aztecs, Incas or the Chilean Mapuche. Even I learned a thing or two. Big kudos to Livia Cleary for shining a light on this often downplayed part of our heritage.
